In three July matches, Toulouse had racked up three wins, scoring 136 points in the process and hopes were high at the Ernest-Wallon that they could turn on the style against compatriots Catalans.

In front of a sparsely populated Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Wrexham followed up their 1-0 win over Manchester United by securing a 3-2 win at the weekend as they took another Premier League scalp.

It was the first outing of pre-season for Daniel Farke’s side, and it started in the worst possible way. Neat interplay from Wrexham saw the Welsh side beat Leeds’ press and move upfield before Kieffer Moore ran off the shoulder of international teammate Joe Rodon before slotting home with less than 40 seconds on the clock.

The big race at the weekend came from Ascot where Kalpana landed the spoils in the King George. Having finished second in the race last year, Andrew Balding’s filly held off a late challenge from Calandagan who came second, with Derby favourite Benvenuto Cellini coming home third.

It was a huge win for Balding, who also tasted Group Two success at York on the same day. With £1.3m in prize money won in just under two hours, the Kingsclere trainer 0is chasing down Aiden O’Brien in the Trainer’s Championship.

On Saturday, Kalapana was sent off with a Race Index spread of 11-14. A first-place finish ensured that buyers were rewarded with a maximum make-up of 50 as they won 36x their stake.
