Weekend's Big Winning Bets

It was a World Cup frenzy this week with four England sides making the semi-finals of their respective competitions and one reaching the final. In Australia, the cricketers squeezed past Sri Lanka whilst across the Tasman, England women’s rugby union side edged past Canada to make the final.

Closer to home, England’s men, women, and wheelchair sides all secured final four berths in the Rugby League World Cup. There was also a packed schedule of football with the usual thrills and spills whilst in racing the Breeders’ Cup took centre stage.

With wall-to-wall sport, we take a look at where the big spread winning make-ups occurred.

REAL BETIS v SEVILLA – BOOKINGS (SETTLED AT 165)

The Seville derby is one of the fiercest rivalries in Spain, so it was perhaps no surprise to see our traders set quite a high spread on Bookings with the market at 74-78 just before kick-off.

Aside from local bragging rights, there was plenty riding on the game as Sevilla were looking to turn around their form following a poor start to the season, whilst Real Betis remain locked in a battle for the top four.

As ever in this match, there was plenty of drama and Sevilla full back Gonzalo Montiel was the first to see red after he was sent off on 38 minutes, just before Betis took the lead through a Jesus Navas own goal. Nabil Fekir was then shown a straight red for the hosts in the third minute of first half injury time and four minutes into the second half Betis were down to nine with Borja Iglesias given his marching orders.

Sevilla managed to grab an equaliser nine minutes from time through Nemanja Gudelj but cards were the main story of the day with nine yellows and three reds making up to 165 points as buyers won 87x their stake.

Buyers who took a risk on Multi-Bookings (first half x second half Bookings) and Cross Bookings (Betis x Sevilla Bookings) were also rewarded with wins of 5180x and 5040x their stake respectively.

SOUTH AFRICA v NETHERLANDS – SA/NED SUPREMACY (SETTLED AT -13)

Stephan Myburgh, Max O’Dowd, and Tom Cooper may not be names you traditionally associate with the Netherlands, but the trio wrote their name into Dutch sporting history on Sunday when they helped their side to victory over South Africa in the Cricket World Cup.

The Dutch batted first and posted 158 runs and although South Africa would have fancied chasing that down, their innings never really got going as they crashed out of the tournament.

Seven of the Proteas side hit between 13 and 25 runs and aside from David Miller’s knock of four runs from one delivery, the next best strike rate was Rilee Roussow on 131.58 after scoring 25 runs from 19 balls.

Before the match, South Africa were heavy favourites on the Supremacy spread which was 58-66, but a 13-run defeat for Temba Bavuma’s side saw the spread settle at -13 as sellers won 71x their stake.

HOLGER RUNE v NOVAK DJOKOVIC – MATCH SUPREMACY (SETTLED AT -15)

Danish sensation Holger Rune became the youngest-ever winner of the Paris Masters when he denied Novak Djokovic a seventh-straight success in the French capital yesterday with a 3-6 6-3 7-5 victory.

Ahead of play at the Accor Arena, the youngster was a 9/2 outsider and, on the Supremacy spread, the line was 9.50-12.50 in Djokovic’s favour.

This spread awards ten points for winning the match and five points for every set won by, so with Rune winning by one set, the market settled at -15, much to the delight of sellers who landed a win of 24.5x their stake.
