Championship lowest points in a season

head-black-1-copy

The EFL Championship has long been one of the most competitive and unpredictable leagues in English football. Formerly known as Division One, it regularly delivers drama at both ends of the table—whether it’s the battle for promotion or the fight to avoid relegation.

While much of the spotlight falls on title winners and promotion heroes, there’s another side to Championship history: the teams that endured truly difficult seasons. Low points totals don’t always tell the full story, but they do highlight campaigns where things simply didn’t click.

Here’s a look at some of the lowest points totals recorded in the Championship era (post-1990s format), including the struggles that defined those seasons.

11. Bolton Wanderers (2018/19) – 32 points

Bolton’s 2018/19 season was overshadowed by serious off-field turmoil. Financial issues, player strikes, and uncertainty around ownership all contributed to a chaotic campaign.

On the pitch, goals were hard to come by, the club’s top scorers managed just four each. Despite the circumstances, Bolton avoided finishing bottom, but relegation was unavoidable.

10. Ipswich Town (2018/19) – 31 points

Just behind Bolton were Ipswich, who finished rock bottom that same season. A turbulent managerial situation, particularly the early dismissal of Paul Hurst, disrupted any chance of stability.

While that campaign ended in relegation, Ipswich have since bounced back impressively, eventually earning promotion to the Premier League in later years.

9 (Tied). Bolton Wanderers (2015/16) – 30 points

Bolton appear again, this time finishing bottom with just five wins all season. Financial struggles and managerial instability played a major role.

One unwanted record stands out: they failed to win a single away game, a statistic that summed up a difficult year.

8 (Tied). Barnsley (2021/22) – 30 points

Barnsley’s campaign was defined less by a single issue and more by consistent underperformance. Managerial changes didn’t help, but neither did conceding 73 goals.

It was a season where momentum never built, ultimately leading to relegation.

7. Rotherham United (2004/05) – 29 points

Rotherham’s first appearance on this list came in 2004/05, when they finished bottom, well adrift of safety.

Managerial changes and ownership uncertainty contributed to a season that proved difficult to recover from in the years that followed.

6. Wimbledon (2003/04) – 29 points

This was a defining, and painful, season for Wimbledon. Amid a controversial relocation to Milton Keynes, fan support dwindled and performances suffered.

The campaign ultimately marked the end of Wimbledon in its original form, leading to the creation of both Milton Keynes Dons and fan-founded AFC Wimbledon.

5. Rotherham United (2023/24) – 27 points

Rotherham’s 2023/24 season, saw them finish bottom once again. A lack of managerial stability and inconsistency throughout the squad played a role.

There were still occasional highlights, like a final-day win over Cardiff City, but overall, it was a campaign to forget.

4 (Tied). Blackpool (2014/15) – 26 points

Blackpool’s season started on shaky ground, with a severely depleted squad heading into pre-season. Off-field issues carried into the campaign, and results reflected that instability.

The season ended in dramatic fashion with a pitch invasion during a match against Huddersfield Town, leading to its abandonment.

3. Stockport County (2001/02) – 26 points

For many years, Stockport held the unwanted record for the lowest points total ever. Their relegation was confirmed unusually early, underlining how tough the season had been.

Oddly, one of their standout moments came after relegation was sealed, a win over eventual champions Manchester City.

2. Rotherham United (2016/17) – 23 points

Second bottom of the list sits Rotherham’s 2016/17 campaign. Three managerial changes and 98 goals conceded made it a season that quickly spiralled. A lack of attacking output only compounded defensive struggles, resulting in a record that may stand for some time.

1. Sheffield Wednesday (2025/26, ongoing) – -3 points

Bottom of the list is the newest entry, Sheffield Wednesday’s 2025/26 season, with the Owls currently sat on -3 points. With the club entering administration at the start of the season and a 12-point deduction imposed, it was always going to be a long and difficult campaign for Wednesday.

Operating with a depleted and largely young squad, they have managed just one win all season and remain on -3 points with two games still to play. To make matters even worse, their relegation was confirmed in the most painful of circumstances, away to their arch-rivals Sheffield United.
