Some of football’s most captivating moments come in the dying minutes of games, with players exhausted, fans on tenterhooks and referees under constant scrutiny. Ahead of the 2026/27 season, we wanted to take a look back at some of the most dramatic late-game moments in footballing history by checking out the latest goals the game has ever seen. 10 – Leon Bailey 90+11’ – Aston Villa v Crystal Palace, 16 September 2023

Despite trailing for the majority of this Premier League clash, Aston Villa managed to secure a two-goal victory thanks to three late goals. Jhon Duran levelled the score in the 87^th minute, but the real drama was yet to come. Douglas Luiz’s penalty in the 98^th minute was topped only by Leon Bailey, who guaranteed the three points with a goal in the dying seconds of the match.

9 – Cole Palmer 90+11’ – Chelsea v Manchester United, 4 April 2024

Cole Palmer’s incredible breakout season in 2023/24 saw him bag 22 goals for the Blues in the league, but none was more famous than this last-gasp winner against Manchester United. The young forward took revenge for all the “Fergie Time” of years gone by to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the Red Devils, with a goal in the 101^st minute completing the comeback after he netted just one minute earlier from the spot. Will we see Palmer return to form this season?

8 – Florian Wirtz 90+11’ – Borussia Mönchengladbach v Bayer Leverkusen, 23 August 2024

After their incredible season in 2023/24, which saw Xabi Alonso’s side go on a 51-match unbeaten streak, Bayer Leverkusen produced more magic to begin the next season with this win over Mönchengladbach. Their famous title-winning season had been defined by the late heroics they consistently produced, and Florian Wirtz kept that magic alive with this late goal in week one of the following Bundesliga campaign. However, the reigning champions would go on to be dethroned by rivals Bayern Munich at the end of the year.

7 – Ramin Rezaeian 90+11’ – Wales v Iran, 25 November 2022

The 2022 World Cup saw the introduction of stricter and more rigorous measures for added time. This led to several games having lengthy stoppage time periods, a trend we saw continue at the 2026 World Cup (though this was also exacerbated by the “hydration breaks”). This game from the group stage saw two late goals, as both sides pushed for a winner in the dying minutes, and it was Iran who capitalised, scoring in the 98^th minute before doubling down in the 101^st minute.

6 – Dirk Kuyt 90+12’ – Arsenal v Liverpool, 17 April 2011

This Premier League classic saw two goals scored in the dying minutes, with both sides scoring from the penalty spot in the 98^th and 102^nd minutes respectively. A successful spot-kick from Robin van Persie looked to have snatched a win for Arsenal, but Dirk Kuyt would equalize just minutes later with a penalty of his own to level the scores.

5 – Harvey Barnes 90+12’ – Newcastle v Leeds, 7 January 2026

Newcastle and Leeds treated us to one of the most breathtaking Premier League fixtures in recent history midway through last season. The hosts fought back from 3-2 down, with a goal from the spot courtesy of Bruno Guimarães drawing them level in the 91^st minute, before Harvey Barnes fired home even deeper into stoppage time to snatch the win from Leeds. At 101 minutes and 48 seconds, Barnes’ goal is the latest winning goal in Premier League history.

4 – Daniel Ciofani 90+13’ – Frosinone v Parma, 3 April 2019

Two sides battling for survival in Serie A back in 2019 produced an incredible match which was capped off by one of the latest goals in Italian history. With the scores level, Daniel Ciofani converted a penalty in the 103^rd minute after a prolonged VAR review to claim all three points for Frosinone. Ciofani’s goal would not be enough to secure Frosinone’s survival, but it did secure his place in footballing history.

3 – Ollie McBurnie 90+13’ – Sheffield United v West Ham, 21 January 2024

Ollie McBurnie scored the latest goal in Premier League history during a chaotic stoppage-time period against West Ham back in 2024. Both sides had players sent off after 90 minutes, with Rhian Brewster and Vladimir Coufal seeing red before the Blades were awarded a penalty for a challenge on McBurnie by Alphonse Areola. The West Ham goalkeeper was injured during the challenge and, after a lengthy delay, was replaced by Lukasz Fabianski, who couldn’t stop McBurnie’s spot-kick. This dramatic equaliser salvaged a point for the Blades, a rare positive moment during a campaign fated for relegation. 

2 – Mehdi Taremi 90+13’ – England v Iran, 21 November 2022

Just days prior to their last-minute goals against Wales, Iran had already experienced some late drama at the 2022 World Cup. Despite trailing 6-1 in their opening match in Qatar, Mehdi Taremi bagged a consolation goal in the 103^rd minute, after an injury to the Iran goalkeeper forced the game to be significantly delayed. Despite their last-gasp heroics, Iran were unable to progress beyond the group stage in Qatar.

1 – Charlie Hughes 90+21’ – Wigan Athletic v Wycombe, 23 January 2024

One of the latest goals ever scored outside of extra-time, this Charlie Hughes strike helped Wigan snatch a victory in the dying moments during a League One clash with Wycombe. The game was severely delayed after the referee was hit in the head by the ball, leaving him unable to complete the match. Hughes struck home a brilliant volley at the end of the nineteen added minutes to score one of the latest goals in footballing history.
