Most Points In A Season Without Automatic Promotion

head

A thrilling finish to this year’s National League season saw York gain promotion to the Football League through a last-minute winner against second-placed Rochdale. This result meant that Rochdale failed to gain automatic promotion, despite amassing an incredible 106 points over the course of the season. Let’s take a look at some of the other highest points totals which still fell short of automatic promotion.

Highest Points Totals in English Football Without Automatic Promotion

107 Points – Notts County, National League 2022/23

Promotion from the National League is especially tricky given that only one side is automatically promoted each year, something which Notts County found this out the hard way in the 2022/23 season, when 107 points saw them fall just short. They came second to Wrexham, who earned the first of three consecutive promotions with 111 points. The Magpies would however go on to gain promotion via the playoffs, defeating Chesterfield in the final.

106 Points – Rochdale, National League 2025/26

On the final day of the season, Rochdale had an opportunity to gain automatic promotion from the National League as they faced league leaders York, who they could overtake with a win. Rochdale went ahead in the 95th minute and fans flooded onto the pitch, but York equalised in the 103rd minute to break their opponents’ hearts. Rochdale are set to play Boreham Wood in the playoff final this weekend.

98 Points – Wrexham, Conference Premier 2011-12

Before their Hollywood takeover, Wrexham fought through many seasons in the fifth tier of English football. They managed an impressive 98 points in the 2011-12 Conference Premier season, which is now called the National League, but were beaten to the title by Fleetwood Town on 103 points. Wrexham lost in the playoff semi-final and wouldn’t gain promotion to the Football League until 2023.

96 Points – York, National League 2024/25

York’s promotion in the 2025/26 season was made all the sweeter after coming agonizingly close the year before. Their 96-point tally was six short of champions Barnet and forced them into the playoffs, where they lost 3-0 to eventual champions Oldham.

96 Points – Sheffield Wednesday, League One 2022/23

Sheffield Wednesday are the only side on our list to come from a league where two teams go up automatically each year. They earned 96 points during the 2022/23 League One season but missed out on automatic promotion thanks to 101 and 98-point hauls from Plymouth and Ipswich. The Owls would eventually earn promotion through the playoffs.

95 Points – Tranmere Rovers, National League 2016/17

Tranmere Rovers amassed 95 points in the 2016/17 National League season, but were beaten to the title by Lincoln City on 99 points. After winning their semi-final on penalties, Tranmere would eventually lose in the playoff final to Forest Green.

95 Points – Carlisle United, National League 2025/26

Carlisle’s season went somewhat under the radar due to the dramatic title race between York and Rochdale, but their haul of 95 points is very impressive nonetheless. However, the Cumbrians were knocked out of the playoff semi-final by Boreham Wood.

94 Points – Wycombe Wanderers, Conference Premier 1991/92

Wycombe’s 94-point tally saw them level with league leaders Colchester, but they missed out on the title on goal difference.  With the playoff format yet to be introduced, Wycombe had to stay in the Conference Premier for another season, though they would be crowned champions the next year.

93 Points – Kidderminster, Conference Premier 2012/13

Kidderminster finished just points behind league winners Mansfield, and had a better goal difference during the 2012/13 Conference Premier season. After narrowly missing out on automatic promotion, the Harriers would go on to lose in the playoff semi-final to Wrexham.

91 Points – Bristol Rovers, Conference Premier 2014/15

Bristol Rovers’ only season outside the Football League came back in 2014/15 as they dropped down to the Conference Premier. Despite missing out on automatic promotion by just one point, the Pirates would go on to win the playoffs after a thrilling penalty shootout victory in the final against Grimsby.

Several teams have reached the 90-point benchmark without gaining automatic promotion. Some notable examples include Sheffield United in the 2011/12 League One side, who finished third on 90 points and lost in the playoff final to Huddersfield Town. The Blades would repeat this feat in 2024/25, losing to Sunderland in the playoff final despite finishing 14 points ahead of them in the league table. Finally, Leeds United also reached 90 points in the 2023/24 season but lost to Southampton in the playoff final.
