The FIFA World Cup is often viewed as a young player's stage. Speed, stamina and athleticism are usually at their peak in a player's twenties, but throughout the tournament's history a select group of veterans have proven that age is just a number.
From iconic goals scored in their late thirties and forties to goalkeepers and captains defying Father Time on football's biggest stage, these players etched their names into World Cup folklore long after most of their peers had retired.
Roger Milla: The Ultimate Record Breaker
When discussing longevity at the World Cup, one name stands above all others – Roger Milla.
The Cameroon legend became the oldest player ever to score at a World Cup when he found the net against Russia at USA 1994 aged 42 years and 39 days. It was a remarkable achievement and a record that still stands over three decades later.
Milla's goal not only secured his place in history but also completed a remarkable World Cup journey that began with his unforgettable performances in Italy 1990, where his celebrations by the corner flag became iconic.
Pepe Joins the Elite
For many years Milla's record looked untouchable, but Portugal defender Pepe moved into second place at the 2022 World Cup.
His goal against Switzerland came at the age of 39 years and 283 days, making him the oldest defender ever to score at a World Cup and the second-oldest goalscorer overall.
Pepe's achievement highlighted the incredible professionalism that allowed him to compete at the highest level well into his late thirties.
Ronaldo, Messi and the Modern Greats
The modern era has seen several legendary names feature among the oldest goalscorers.
Cristiano Ronaldo sits third on the all-time list after scoring for Portugal at 37 years and 292 days during the 2022 tournament.
His long-time rival Lionel Messi also appears in the top twenty after scoring in Qatar aged 35 years and 177 days as he guided Argentina to World Cup glory.
Meanwhile, France's Olivier Giroud became one of the oldest players to score in the tournament at 36 years and 71 days, demonstrating the importance of experience on the biggest stage.

While goalscorers often grab the headlines, some players have simply defied age by stepping onto the pitch at an age when most footballers have long since retired.
Leading the way is Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, who became the oldest player ever to feature at a World Cup when he appeared against Saudi Arabia in 2018 aged 45 years and 161 days.
El Hadary's appearance broke a record that many believed would never be surpassed.
Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón also made history in Brazil 2014 when he came off the bench against Japan aged 43 years and 3 days.
Unsurprisingly, Roger Milla appears again on the list thanks to his record-breaking appearance against Russia in 1994.

While the records of Roger Milla and Essam El Hadary remain some way off, several veteran stars could add their names to the history books at the 2026 World Cup.
Modern sports science, nutrition and recovery methods are allowing players to extend their careers further than ever before, and a number of familiar faces could still be competing on football's biggest stage in North America.

If selected, Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon would become one of the oldest players ever to appear at a World Cup. At 43 years old, only Essam El Hadary and Faryd Mondragón would have been older among World Cup participants.
Cristiano Ronaldo continues to rewrite football history and could become one of the oldest outfield players ever to feature at the tournament. Having already become the third-oldest goalscorer in World Cup history, the Portuguese superstar may yet climb even higher up the rankings.
Meanwhile, veteran goalkeepers Guillermo Ochoa, Manuel Neuer and Vozinha could continue the trend of experienced shot-stoppers dominating the list of the oldest World Cup players. Ochoa in particular would be chasing a remarkable sixth World Cup appearance, having become one of the tournament's most recognisable goalkeepers across multiple generations.
Croatia captain Luka Modrić and Bosnia-Herzegovina striker Edin Džeko also remain among football's ageless wonders. Both have continued to perform at elite international level despite entering their forties and would add another chapter to their legendary careers by reaching the 2026 tournament.
