The tournament is taking a hiatus in 2026 to make way for a series between New Zealand and South Africa but will return in 2027 for its 14th edition.

The Rugby Championship first began as the Tri-Nations Series in 1996, a three-team tournament involving Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Argentina would join the competition in 2012, and the tournament was rebranded as the Rugby Championship. New Zealand have been the most successful side since this rebrand, winning 9 of the 13 editions since 2012. South Africa have won three, including the two most recent editions, with Australia winning one and Argentina none.
