Top 10 Goalkeeper Goals

head

Goalkeepers spend most of their lives trying to prevent goals, but every now and then they get the chance to score one for themselves. Following on from Anatoliy Trubin’s dramatic winner for Benfica against Real Madrid, let’s take a look at the best goals ever scored by goalkeepers.

10 – Alberto Brignoli v AC Milan, 2017

Italian side Benevento Calcio opened the 2017/18 season with a record-breaking 14 straight losses, leaving them dead last in Serie A. However, they broke this streak in spectacular fashion. Whilst 2-1 down against giants AC Milan, goalkeeper Brignoli came forward during a late free kick and scored from the cross. It was a special moment, but unfortunately wasn’t enough to keep Benevento from being relegated later that season.

9 – Peter Schmeichel v Everton, 2001

Legendary shot stopper Peter Schmeichel scored his only Premier League goal during his time with Aston Villa against Everton. A loose ball from a corner fell to the Dane at the edge of the six-yard box, and he volleyed the ball in with an impressive strike. It was the first goal by a goalkeeper in Premier League history and earns Schmeichel a spot on our list.

8 – Ivan Provedel v Atlético Madrid, 2023

Ivan Provedel secured a crucial point for Lazio during the 2023 Champions League group stage with a stoppage time goal. Down 1-0 to Atlético Madrid and with no time left, the Italian connected with a cross to equalize with the last kick of the game. Provedel timed his run to perfection to beat the Atlético defenders to the cross, looking more like a centre forward than a goalkeeper as he saved a point for his side.

7 – Alisson v West Brom, 2021

Liverpool and Brazil number one Alisson has shown some flair close to his own goal, but his skills were on display in the opposition box back in 2021. With Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League hanging in the balance, Alisson came up for a late corner and scored with a bullet header. The goal gave the Reds a vital victory in their bid for a top four finish.

6 – Rogério Ceni v Corinthians, 2011

Most keepers lucky enough to score only do so once in a blue moon, but Rogério Ceni scored an amazing 129 in his career. The Brazilian was a dead-ball specialist, often taking free kicks and penalties for São Paulo, and holds the record for most goals by a goalkeeper in footballing history. Perhaps the finest example came against Corinthians, when he curled a beautiful free kick over the wall and into the top corner. Ceni’s goal was made even more special by the fact that it was the 100th of his career.

5 – Martin Hansen v PSV, 2015

Fans would usually be sceptical of a backheel attempt from their goalkeeper but not on this occasion. ADO Den Haag keeper Martin Hansen scored a spectacular goal against PSV when he backheeled a cross past his opposite man in the dying minutes, earning his side a vital point. Hansen’s finish was probably the most skilful execution we’ve seen so far and earns him the number five spot on our list.

4 – José Luis Chilavert v Ferro Carril Oeste, 1999

Another goalkeeper who regularly found the back of the opposition net, Chilavert took many free kicks and penalties throughout his career to amass 67 goals. The Paraguayan’s most prolific day came while playing for Vélez Sarsfield against Ferro Carril Oeste when he scored a hat-trick of penalties! His third was an especially good strike, rifled in off the crossbar, and made the first goalkeeper ever to score a hat-trick.

3 – Jimmy Glass v Plymouth, 1999

Veteran goalkeeper Jimmy Glass scored an enormously significant goal for Carlisle at the end of the 1998/99 season. With Carlisle facing relegation from the Third Division, Glass came forward for a stoppage time corner. He pounced on a ricocheting ball and scored a goal which prompted a mass pitch invasion and kept Carlisle in the Football League.

2 – Anatoliy Trubin v Real Madrid, 2026

The most recent goal on our list was one of the most dramatic in recent memory. With Benfica winning 3-2 but needing another goal to qualify for the Champions League knockouts on goal difference, Trubin came forward for a late free kick and headed home the delivery. The goal sent Benfica through to the next round of the Champions League and sent manager José Mourinho into wild celebrations.

1 – Oscarine Masuluke v Orlando Pirates, 2016

This goal may not have come in the biggest game, but the quality and flair of the finish gives it the number one spot on our list. Playing in the South African Premiership, Baroka number one Oscarine Masuluke came forward for a corner and met the cross with a stunning bicycle kick. The spectacular finish levelled the game for Baroka and almost earned Masuluke the Puskás Award, with his strike only missing out to Olivier Giroud’s famous scorpion kick for Arsenal.
