Can Aston Villa – looking to return to the Premier League on the 3rd time of asking – get their 2018/109 Championship season off to a strong start by beating Hull, at 7.45pm on Sky Sports? Villa came so, so close to climbing back into the top flight last season. Finishing in 4th, they pushed past Middlesbrough in their play-off semi-final, picking up a 1-0 win over the 2 legs. But they stumbled at Wembley, losing 1-0 to Fulham despite the west London club playing the final 20 minutes with only 10 men. So far Steve Bruce hasn’t brought any fresh blood in to help the Birmingham side in their quest to reclaim a spot in the Premier League. The only action has been the other way, with Jordam Amavi sold to Marseille for £9 million and Pierluigi Gollini off to Atalanta for £3 million. Yet they should be boosted by the full-season return of Jonathan Kodjia; the French forward missed most of 2017/18 through injury, ands heads into Monday night at a Super Mega PGM of 23-28. That still leaves them with arguably a better base than Hull. The Tigers had a troublesome time of it in 2017/18. They ended up in 18th, always in the relegation conversation without ever really spending too much time in the actual drop zone. They’ve stuck with manager Nigel Adkins, who joined at the start of December and oversaw a slight improvement in form in the second half of the season, and have been far busier than their Monday opponents in the transfer market. Their signings include Nottingham Forest’s Eric Lichaj, Genoa’s Savid Milinkovic, West Ham’s Reece Burke, PSV’s Jordy de Wijs and Sheffield United’s George Long. This game is actually a repeat of last season’s opener, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Villa Park (their second meeting at the KCOM Stadium finished 0-0). The beaten play-off finalists have the edge on Monday, however, with Spreadex offering an Aston Villa/Hull (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 0.05-0.25 alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.35-2.55.
