Will a struggling Newcastle have any fight left in them for Tuesday’s FA Cup 3rd round replay at Blackburn? The Toon were dealt a tough end to 2018, and an even more difficult start to 2019. Boxing Day brought with it a 4-0 hangover at Liverpool, while their final game of the year was a disappointing draw at Watford, one that saw the Hornets equalise with less than 10 minutes left to play.
Any New Year cheer was quickly dispelled on January 2nd, as Man United left St James’ Park with 2-0 victory. Most recently, at the weekend, they put up a decent fight at Chelsea, only to succumb to a bit of magic from Willian. That loss at Stamford Bridge, the club’s 12th league defeat of the season, caused them to slip into the relegation zone for the first time since the end of October; they now sit in 18th, 4 points ahead of Fulham and one behind Cardiff and Southampton. Between those top tier clashes came the small matter of the FA Cup, a competition it appears Rafa Benitez wishes he didn’t have to deal with at the moment. Fielding a much-changed side against Blackburn, Newcastle are only still in the Cup thanks to an 84th minute penalty from Matt Ritchie, having been behind following Bradley Dack’s 56th minute opener. The Rovers, who are currently stuck in 14th in the Championship but are actually only 6 points away from the play-off zone, will fancy their chances on Tuesday night. They are yet to lose in 2019, have something their visitors sorely lack, i.e. an actual goalscorer in Dack – who sits at a Super Mega PGM of 26-31 – and will likely once again be facing a weakened Toon. Spreadex are offering a Blackburn/Newcastle Goal Supremacy spread of 0.05-0.25, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.3-2.5.
