With the pre-tournament favourite out, the 2018 PDC World Matchplay has been blow wide open. So who’s best positioned to benefit? Going into the 1st round Michael van Gerwen looked to have the competition locked up, especially with Phil Taylor now retired. So strong were Mighty Mike’s chances that he sat at an Outright Index spread of 42-45, almost double that of the next player, with an odds on price of 4/7. And yet, in a bona fide shocker, the world no. 1 slumped to a 10-6 defeat at the hands of countryman Jeffrey de Zwaan, arguably leaving the World Matchplay without a clear frontrunner. The person that has emerged as the new favourite in what is a far tighter pack is 2018 UK Open winner Gary Anderson, who has an Outright Index spread of 27.5-30.5 alongside a fixed odds price of 9/4. Anderson beat Simon Bunting in the 1st round, and is set to face Raymond van Barneveld Tuesday’s closer, sitting at a Points Supremacy spread of 9.5-12.5. Not too far behind Anderson is Rob Cross, who’s at an Outright Index spread of 24-27 and fixed odds of 15/2. The world no. 3 has an eminently winnable 2nd round fixture against Darren Webster on Wednesday, heading to the Winter Gardens at a Cross/Webster Points Supremacy spread of 15.5-18.5. Rounding out the top 3 is last year’s beaten finalist Peter Wright, at an Outright Index spread of 22-25 and fixed odds price of 9/2. He’s followed by Adrian Lewis, at 16-19, who now takes on de Zwaan rather than van Gerwen, meaning he has a decent chance of progressing to the quarter-finals, at a Lewis/de Zwaan Points Supremacy spread of 9.5-12.5. Elsewhere Michael Smith, in the same half of the draw as Lewis and Anderson, is at 15.5-18.5, with Mensur Suljovic at 13-16, James Wade at 12-14 and Daryl Gurney at 10.5-12.5.
