The Australian Open is one of the four 'Grand Slams', i.e. the biggest and most prestigious tournaments in the professional tennis calendar. It comes first in the calendar with the tournament being played very early in the tennis season, in mid-January.
It is one of the two hard-court majors alongside the US Open, and predominantly favours aggressive players with big weapons like powerful groundstrokes and strong serves. However, endurance also plays a massive role due to matches being played in the Australian heat, which adds an extra challenge to navigate.
The tournament was founded back in 1905, and was played on grass until 1987, when the surface was switched to hard courts.
The current reigning men's champion is Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, while the reigning women's champion is Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina.
In terms of record holders, Serbia's Novak Djokovic holds the men's record of 10 titles at the event, while on the women's side Aussie great Margaret Court won 11 titles.
Known as the 'Happy Slam', the Australian Open is also the highest-attended Grand Slam event on the tennis calendar with more than 1,360,000 people attending the 2026 tournament.
The next Australian Open will be played between 11th and 31st January 2027, including all of the qualification rounds prior to the start of the tournament-proper.
The Australian Open continues to be played at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
