What is the Breeders’ Cup?

The Breeders’ Cup takes place this weekend, although not everyone is familiar with what is one of the biggest horse racing events across the world. The Cup is an annual series of Group One races held each October in America and it attracts some of the best horses from across the world.

Legendary trainer Darrell Wayne Lukas – who sadly passed away in June 2025 – has the most Breeders’ Cup wins to his name with 20, although he is joined at the top of the table by Ireland’s Aidan O’Brien. Bob Baffert, who has trained two Triple Crown winners, has 19 Breeders’ Cup wins.

One of the more unique features of the Cup, is that races are held across both turf and dirt on the same card, so there really is something for everyone!

Who Are the Breeders’ Cup 2025 Favourites?

As we mentioned, the Breeders’ Cup attracts some of the best horses from across the world, and there is a strong contingent heading over from the UK and Ireland. Aidan O’Brein could secure his 21st Cup win with the first Group One of the card with Cheveley Park winner True Love likely to head the betting in the five furlong Juvenile Turf Sprint. O’Brien saddles Precise in the Juvenile Fillies’ Turf, with the home challenge spearheaded by Time To Dream for New York-based trainer Todd Pletcher.

Gstaad – running in the Juvenile Turf - will be a familiar name to punters on these shores after winning at Royal Ascot, whilst Minnie Hauk and Rebel’s Romance look set to go head-to-head in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Bricks And Mortar for Irad Ortiz Jr and Chad C Brown in 2019 was the only US winner in the last ten renewals of the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Notable Speech was a length away from winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile last year for Charlei Appleby and connections and he goes again this time around having landed a Group One at Woodbine back in September. Andrew Balding’s See The Fire is likely to be the main European challenger in the Filly and Mare Turf after a superb Middleton Stakes win earlier this season.
