England’s ability to lurch from crisis to crisis is remarkable and even after a gutsy win over New Zealand in their opening Test, scandal continues to hang over the nation’s cricketers. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were the latest to be under the spotlight after the pair were on the fringes of a scuffle at a nightclub following the 115-run victory in the opening Test. There is no evidence to suggest that the pair were actively involved in the scrap, but by simply being present in the nightclub, they were in breach of team protocols.
Vice-captain Harry Brook might have been the man to captain England in Stokes’ enforced absence this week, but given the Yorkshireman was involved in a nightclub incident of his own over the winter in New Zealand, the optics probably weren’t great. Instead, it will be Brook’s fellow Tyke Joe Root who will once again step up to captain the side.
Root has a bit of a thankless task as well, with a phalanx of absent bowlers, including Ollie Robinson who will miss the second Test due to a knee injury. The Sussex seamer took seven wickets on his return to the international stage, with county team mate and uncapped 24-year-old Henry Crocombe called up to the 16-man squad as cover. Jofra Archer is in line to make his summer Test bow in place of Atkinson, and two from Matt Fisher, Sonny Baker, and Crocombe will likely be selected if England choose to play without a dedicated spin option.
In the middle order, England are likely to choose a specialist bat to replace all-rounder Stokes. Jordan Cox or Somerset starlet James Rew could be in line for a Test debut.
For New Zealand, the major selection issue surrounds the absence of Kane Williamson. A mainstay of the Black Caps for 16 years and their all-time run scorer, the 35-year-old dropped himself after scores of 0 and 18 on the minefield at Lord’s, before announcing his retirement. Will Young, who scores at an average of 27.87 in English Tests and has extensive County Championship experience, has been drafted in to replace him.

A much-changed England side are favourites to get back-to-back victories and wrap up the series, with the hosts priced at 5/6. The tourists have only won one Test on these shores this century having drawn the 2015 series 1-1 and they are 7/5 to level up this series in pursuit of the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy. With the weather set fair, the draw is an outlier but can be backed at 7/1.
The Lord’s pitch was the major talking point following the first Test, but the pitch at the Oval is very different and the batsmen should enjoy conditions. Surrey regularly play home games without a dedicated spin option and, as mentioned before, it would not be a surprise to see England do similar this week. If you do want to eliminate the draw from the betting, you can back England draw no bet at 4/6, with New Zealand 11/10 in the same market.
