The French Open is one of the four 'Grand Slams', i.e. the biggest and most prestigious tournaments in the professional tennis calendar. It comes second in the calendar with the tournament being played in May-June each year.
It is the one and only clay court major, and predominantly favours consistent baseline players with strong groundstrokes and those that play with more topspin. However, endurance and physicality also play a massive role due to matches often being intensely fought, grinding slogs with little to no 'free points', meaning players with big serves are far less effective than on hard courts or grass courts. It is widely considered as the most challenging of the Grand Slams to conquer.
The tournament was founded back in 1891, and up to 1975 was the only Major that was not played on grass courts.
The current reigning men's champion is Germany's Alexander Zverev who won his first career Grand Slam in the 2026 tournament, while the reigning women's champion is Mirra Andreeva, who ended the fairytale run of Poland's Maja Chwalinska.
In terms of record holders, Spain's Rafael Nadal - the undisputed 'King of Clay' - holds the men's record of 14 titles at the event, while on the women's side USA's Chris Evert won 7 titles.
Although the tournament was established in 1891, it only became a Grand Slam in 1925!
The next French Open will be played between 17th May and the 6th June 2027, including all of the qualification rounds prior to the start of the tournament-proper.
The French Open continues to be played at Roland Garros in Paris, France.
