Newcastle v Sunderland Betting Preview Gameweek 31

The last match between Newcastle and Sunderland was a Premier League clash at St James' Park on Sunday, 22 March 2026. Sunderland won 2-1.

Newcastle opened the scoring early through Anthony Gordon after a mistake from the Sunderland defence handed a good chance to the hosts. However, Sunderland would equalize around the hour mark through Chemsdine Talbi. The two sides were fairly evenly matched throughout the game, but Sunderland's Brian Brobbey found the net in the 90th minute to give Sunderland the win. This gave the Black Cats the league double over their rivals and saw Newcastle slip down to 12th, one place below Sunderland in the league table.

NEWCASTLE V SUNDERLAND BETTING FORM

Newcastle head into this Tyne-Wear derby on the back of a disappointing midweek loss in the Champions League. The Magpies were hammered 7-2 at the Camp Nou, losing 8-3 on aggregate to Barcelona and being eliminated from the Champions League. With Eddie Howe’s men also out of the FA and EFL Cups, focus will be entirely on the league for the rest of the season. Newcastle currently sit seven points off fifth place, so they will need to find their best form if they are to qualify for Europe again.

NEWCASTLE LEAGUE FORM

WIN: Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle, 14 March 2026
WIN: Newcastle 2-1 Manchester United, 4 March 2026
LOSS: Newcastle 2-3 Everton, 28 February 2026

After a strong start to the season, Sunderland’s form has somewhat tailed off, with the Black Cats looking set for a mid-table finish. Régis Le Bris’ men were eliminated from the FA Cup in disappointing fashion after losing to League One side Port Vale, and have just one win in their last six matches in the league. However, a Tyne-Wear derby is sure to have Sunderland fired up, especially after winning the reverse fixture in December. Can they do the double over their rivals?

WIN: Leeds 0-1 Sunderland, 3 March 2026

NEWCASTLE V SUNDERLAND FOOTBALL SPREAD BETTING PRICES

We also offer a number of spread betting markets for Sunday’s clash, including our “Goal Supremacy” market. This market currently has Newcastle favoured by 0.8-1 goals. This means that if you placed a “buy” bet, you would need Newcastle to win by at least two goals to start turning a profit, and if you sold, you would need Sunderland to win or draw, or Newcastle to only win by one goal. If you bought, a two-goal victory for Newcastle would win you 1 times your stake, a three-goal victory 2 times your stake, and so on.

However, if you bought and Newcastle lost or drew the game, you would lose money. Here, a one-goal loss would cost you 2 times your stake, a two-goal loss 3 times your stake, etc.

You can also bet on the total number of goals scored during the game with our Total Goals market. This is currently set at 2.7-2.9. If you’re expecting plenty of goalmouth action, you would “buy” and would need at least three total goals to turn a profit. Alternatively, if you expect a low-scoring affair, you could “sell” and would need two goals or fewer to turn a profit.

If you sold and the game ended 1-0, you would win 1.7 times your stake. However, if you sold and the game ended 4-2 you would lose 3.3 times your stake. It’s important to remember that when spread betting, if your bet loses, you can lose multiples of your stake, so be sure to choose appropriate stake sizes for each market.
