The Ashes is one of cricket’s most famous and fiercely contested rivalries, played between England and Australia since 1882. The name dates back to Australia’s first win on English soil at The Oval, when The Sporting Times mockingly published an obituary declaring English cricket dead and its “ashes” taken to Australia. Later that year, captain Ivo Bligh vowed to “recover the Ashes,” creating a legend that endures today.
The series is traditionally a five-Test contest held alternately in England and Australia every two years. The winners claim a small urn, now kept at Lord's Cricket Ground, symbolising over a century of rivalry and pride.
More than a trophy, The Ashes showcases cricket at its highest level, shaped by icons such as Don Bradman, Shane Warne, Ian Botham, and Ben Stokes, and defined by unforgettable moments that continue to captivate fans worldwide.
The most recent Ashes series was played in Australia from November 2025 to January 2026, and Australia won the five-match Test series 4–1 against England.
Australia took an early lead with victories in the first three Tests, England broke a long losing streak by winning the fourth Test, but Australia sealed the series by winning the final match.
That result means Australia retain the Ashes until the next series.
2025-26 – Australia won 4–1 in Australia
2023 – Drawn 2–2 in England (Australia retained the Ashes as holders)
2021-22 – Australia won 4–0 in Australia
2019 – Drawn 2–2 in England (Australia retained the Ashes as holders)
2017-18 – Australia won 4–0 in Australia
The next Ashes series is scheduled to take place in 2027 typically around June and July 2027, though exact dates haven’t been officially confirmed yet.
England will host Australia for the next five-match Test series, with the traditional rotation switching back to English grounds after the previous series was held in Australia. Some famous venues which have hosted Ashes tests in the past include Lords, The Oval, Trent Bridge, Old Trafford and Edgbaston.
