The US Open is one of the four 'Grand Slams', i.e. the biggest and most prestigious tournaments in the professional tennis calendar. It comes fourth and last in the calendar with the tournament being played in August-September each year.
It is one of the two hard-court Majors, and generally favours aggressive players with powerful serves and groundstrokes. The court surface is considered to be 'medium-fast'.
The tournament was founded back in 1881, and has been played on all three surfaces throughout it's history. From 1881 to 1974 it was played on grass, then on clay from 1975 to 1977, and on hard courts from 1978 until now.
The current reigning men's champion is Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, while the reigning women's champion is Aryna Sabalenka.
In terms of record holders, three men (William Larned, Richard Sears and Bill Tilden) hold the men's record of 7 titles at the event, while on the women's side USA's Molla Mallory won 8 titles.
The next US Open tennis will be played between 24th August and the 13th September 2026, including all of the qualification rounds prior to the start of the tournament-proper.
The US Open tennis continues to be played at Flushing Meadows in New York, USA.
