Wimbledon is one of the four 'Grand Slams', i.e. the biggest and most prestigious tournaments in the professional tennis calendar, and is widely considered the most famous and prestigious tennis tournament of all, and one of the biggest in all of sports. It comes third in the yearly calendar with the tournament being played in June-July each year during the British summer.
It is the one and only grass court major, and predominantly favours aggressive, attacking players with strong serves and powerful, flat groundstrokes. However, the modern day has seen less of the serve-and-volley winning style of yesteryear, allowing baseline-focused players to thrive without having to fundamentally change their playing style.
The tournament is the oldest of all the Grand Slams and was founded back in 1877, with 138 editions of the tournament having been played (up to 2026).
The current reigning men's champion is Italy's Jannik Sinner who claimed his second Wimbledon crown in 2026 by defeating Alexander Zverev, while the reigning women's champion is Czechia's Linda Noskova, who defeated her countrywoman Karolina Muchova in the final.
In terms of record holders, Swiss great Roger Federer still holds the men's record of 8 titles at the event, while on the women's side US-Czech player Martina Navratilova won a total of 9 trophies.
The next Wimbledon will be played between 28th June and the 11th July 2027, including all of the qualification rounds prior to the start of the tournament-proper.
