South Africa v British & Irish Lions - 1st Test
Saturday 5pm, Sky Sports Action
After five warm-up matches and several weeks of pandemic-induced uncertainty, the British and Irish Lions’ three Test series against South Africa can finally take centre stage. The Lions’ last visit to South Africa (2009) was their last losing tour, and with the Springboks going into this series as the World Champions and the number one ranked nation (compared with second in 2009), a stern test has been promised.
The last four tours have been won or drawn by the team to take out game one, so the winner of this encounter will earn a significant advantage. The Lions themselves couldn’t beat the closing spread in either of their games against Japan or ‘South Africa A’, winning just one half on rugby on each occasion. This suggests some vulnerabilities could be exposed at some point in this Test, with their four victories of 40+ points against South African provincial sides perhaps a less accurate indication of where the squad is at.
