Sports Betting Blog 19/07/2017: Premier League Points 17-18 betting preview

The new Premier League season spread betting points predictions are now live – but who would punters have been best to buy or sell last term?

The table below shows the teams that either over-performed or under-performed based on the Spreadex pre-season points expectations.



After amassing just 50 points in the 15-16 campaign, Champions Chelsea stormed to the title with a huge haul of 93 points – a massive 21.25 points above the Spreadex pre-season prediction.

Tottenham also performed far better than expected (18.75 points above their pre-season spread mid-point) with Liverpool and Everton the next best performers.

Taking fifth and sixth place were Burnley and West Brom. The former helped by superb home form throughout the campaign, the latter aided by a strong first-half of the season.

Arsenal, Man City, Bournemouth and Hull all performed slightly better than their pre-season predictions, but this was still not enough to save the Tigers from the drop.

As for the worst performing sides, Sunderland were a huge 16.25 points below their predicted pre-season haul, ultimately resulting in relegation for the Black Cats.

Leicester followed their freak title-winning 15-16 season with a disappointing 44 point haul while Middlesbrough – the third relegated side – and West Ham also performed far below par; the Hammers not helped by difficulties settling into their new stadium plus an upsetting rumpus with Dimitri Payet.

Southampton, Man United and Crystal Palace all fell below expected standards while Swansea, Stoke and Watford were only slightly below their pre-season predictions.

So what does all this mean for the coming season?

The table below shows the 17-18 points predictions with Man City and Chelsea leading the way followed closely by Man United - who are forecast to this time have a far better season than their previous two campaigns - and Liverpool.



Tottenham are predicted to have a tougher time than last season due to their move to Wembley while White Hart Lane is rebuilt.

Southampton are tipped to improve under Mauricio Pellegrino and Leicester are predicted to build on last season under Craig Shakespeare while Arsenal, Everton, West Ham, Stoke and Crystal Palace are forecast to have similar seasons to last time out.

Bournemouth, West Brom, Watford and Burnley are tipped to fare worse than their 2016-17 campaigns.

As for the promoted sides, Newcastle are expected to just tip 40 points, which should keep them up, but Brighton and Huddersfield are not expected to have enough to survive.
