106 points, set by Reading FC in 2005/06.
Steve Coppell’s Reading side enjoyed a record-breaking 2005/06 Championship campaign, finishing on 106 points after winning 31, drawing 13 and losing just twice. They scored 99 goals, conceded only 32 and went on a remarkable 33-game unbeaten run, finishing 16 points clear of second-placed Sheffield United. Remarkably, one of their only two defeats came on the opening day of the season!
At the other end of the spectrum is the lowest ever league totals. Read our blogs on the Championship lowest points in a season and Lowest points totals in Premier League history.
Only six sides in Championship history have reached 100 points or more in a single season, with Reading FC holding the record after their remarkable 106-point campaign in 2005/06.
The second-highest points total is jointly held by Leicester City and Newcastle United, who both finished their respective campaigns with 102 points.
Leicester’s achievement came in the 2013/14 season under manager Nigel Pearson. Key players, including Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Player of the Season Danny Drinkwater, helped guide the Foxes to a remarkable points tally as they secured the Championship title.
Newcastle United also reached 102 points during their title-winning 2009/10 campaign under Chris Hughton. The prolific partnership of Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan contributed 34 league goals between them, helping the Magpies comfortably secure promotion back to the Premier League.
Next on the list is Burnley’s outstanding 2022/23 campaign, when they secured promotion to the Premier League with seven games remaining. Under Vincent Kompany, who has since gone on to manage Bayern Munich, the Clarets won the title in dominant fashion. To make the achievement even sweeter for Burnley supporters, they confirmed their promotion away at arch-rivals Blackburn Rovers before later securing the league title.
The final two sides to reach the 100-point mark are Leeds United and Burnley, who both achieved the feat in the 2024/25 season. The pair finished on an impressive 100 points apiece in a memorable title race, with Leeds claiming the Championship crown on goal difference after Manor Solomon scored a stoppage-time winner away at Plymouth Argyle on the final day of the season.
West Ham currently sit second in the Championship with 22 points from their opening 11 games. Despite being second in the table, the Hammers are favourites to win the title, priced at 10/11 on our fixed odds Championship outright market.
Their 22 points so far equate to an average of 2.00 points per game, putting them on course to finish the season with 92 points. To match Reading’s record-breaking total of 106 points, however, West Ham would need to average 2.40 points per game across their remaining 35 fixtures. This would surpass Reading’s average of 2.30 points per game over the course of their entire 2005/06 campaign.
Spreadex’s Championship points prediction spread betting market suggests the Hammers will fall short of the record, with their points total spread priced at 88–90 points.
One record West Ham are currently on track to break is the record for the most goals scored in a Championship season. This is currently held by Fulham, who scored 106 goals during their 2021/22 campaign.
West Ham have already scored 30 goals in their opening 11 games, averaging 2.73 goals per game. If they maintain this rate across the season, they are on course to score around 125 goals, comfortably surpassing Fulham's record. The Hammers would need to average just over 2.17 goals per game across their remaining 35 fixtures to beat the existing record.
