Scoring, or missing, penalties can be the difference between a league title and a season of heartbreak. And since the introduction of VAR in 2019/20, Premier League penalties have become an even more controversial topic of conversation, with every spot kick awarded coming under scrutiny. Here at Spreadex, we've crunched the numbers to look at which teams have had the most success from the spot in Premier League history.
Specifically, which teams have scored the most penalties, and who are the top spot-kick takers from each of those clubs?
The Blues have scored more penalties than any other side in the Premier League, thanks in large part to Frank Lampard, who has scored more time from the spot than any player in the league's history.
1. Frank Lampard – 43 scored2. Cole Palmer - 18 scored3. Eden Hazard – 14 scored4. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – 12 scored5. Frank Leboeuf – 10 scored
Liverpool come in at 156 penalties scored, with contributions from Lampard's former England colleague Steven Gerrard, and all-time leader Mo Salah. The Egyptian King amassed 35 penalties before leaving in 2026.
1. Mohamed Salah - 35 scored2. Steven Gerrard – 32 scored3. Robbie Fowler – 14 scored4. James Milner – 12 scored5. Michael Owen – 10 scored
Of course United were going to be near the top – it’s maybe even a surprise that they aren’t no. 1. Current captain Bruno Fernandes leads the way on 28, and will surely add to his tally over the coming years.
1. Bruno Fernanades - 28 scored2. Wayne Rooney – 20 scored3. Ruud van Nistelrooy – 17 scored4. Eric Cantona – 14 scored5. Cristiano Ronaldo – 14 scored
Reigning champions Arsenal sit fourth in our list. Unsurprisingly, it's Thierry Henry, part of the Invincibles squad, who leads the way, whilst Bukayo Saka leads active players.
1. Thierry Henry – 22 scored2. Ian Wright – 16 scored3. Bukayo Saka - 12 scored4. Robin van Persie – 9 scored5. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 9 scored
City have climbed up this list over the last decade or so with elite strikers like Sergio Aguero and Erling Haaland, the latter of whom will surely top their list by the end of his time in Manchester.
1. Sergio Aguero – 27 scored2. Erling Haaland - 20 scored3. Carlos Tevez – 12 scored4. Yaya Toure – 11 scored5. Nicolas Anelka – 7 scored
Just two behind City, Newcastle have scored 127 spot kicks in the Premier League. The all-time leading goal scorer in Premier League history, Alan Shearer, is their best ever taker, with 35 to his name.
1. Alan Shearer – 35 scored2. Peter Beardsley – 13 scored3. Callum Wilson - 11 scored4. Alexander Isak - 11 scored5. Nolberto Solano – 6 scored
One of only 6 sides to play in every season of the Premier League, the Toffees have scored 114 penalties in the top flight. Top takers include legendary full-back Leigthon Baines and current Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
1. Leighton Baines – 19 scored2. David Unsworth – 19 scored3. Mikel Arteta – 10 scored4. Michael Ball – 6 scored5. Gylfi Sigurðsson – 6 scored
Spurs have managed 111 penalties in the Premier League. Almost a third of their tally comes from England number 9 Harry Kane, a player the north Londoners have sorely missed in recent seasons.
1. Harry Kane - 33 scored2. Teddy Sheringham - 18 scored3. Robbie Keane – 15 scored4. Darren Anderton – 5 scored5. Rafael van der Vaart – 5 scored
West Ham come in at 9th place, with penalty machine Mark Noble providing the most individually. Currently playing in the Championship, the Hammers will have to wait a little while before adding to their tally.
1. Mark Noble – 33 scored2. Julian Dicks – 13 scored3. Paolo Di Canio – 12 scored4. Lucas Paqueta - 7 scored5. Manuel Lanzini - 6 scored
Finishing off our top ten are Aston Villa. Their top taker, Gareth Barry, spent 365 games of his previously record breaking 653 Premier League appearances with the Villains.
1. Gareth Barry - 22 scored2. Juan Pablo Angel - 9 scored3. Christian Benteke - 8 scored4. Dwight Yorke - 7 scored5. Ollie Watkins - 7 scored
