Can Liverpool reclaim 1st place – however briefly – by smashing a rebounding Southampton this Friday, at 8pm on Sky Sports Premier League? The Reds have still only lost one game in the league this season. And yet, because of who that game was against, it might not be enough. Having both played 32 fixtures, Liverpool now trail Man City by just one point, the title race set to go down to the wire.
While they are the ones needing to apply pressure, there is an argument to be made that the next few weeks work in Liverpool’s favour. In terms of top tier competition, the Reds only really have Chelsea left to face; City, meanwhile, have back-to-back battles against Tottenham – who Liverpool narrowly beat thanks to a 90th minute own goal at the weekend – and Man United. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Reds can’t take any fixture for granted, even if their opponents are fighting relegation. Southampton are actually in their best shape for a while now. In their last 4 matches, they’ve won 3 – including a victory over a troubled Tottenham – and lost once, an unlucky, and late, defeat at Man United. That puts them 5 points clear of Cardiff in 18th, a safety belt that would widen to 8 points if they win Friday’s game in hand. This would be the perfect opportunity for Mohamed Salah to rediscover the kind of form that sees him on 20 goals in all competitions. The Egyptian international has failed to find the back of the net in Liverpool’s last 8 games, but still travels to St Mary’s at a Super Mega PGM of 48-56. Sadio Mane, also on 20 goals this season, is then at 39-46, with Roberto Firmino is at 27-32. Charlie Austin, meanwhile, is at 17-21 for the hosts. There was only ever going to be one favourite for this match. Spreadex are offering a Liverpool/Southampton (h) Goal Supremacy spread of 1.25-1.45, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.75-2.95.
