Who will win the 2018 PDC World Matchplay, picking up the newly named Phil Taylor Trophy in the process? It’s no surprise that World No. 1, and 2-time Matchplay champ, Michael van Gerwen is favourite in 2018, especially since the competition’s indefatigable all-timer Taylor has finally retired. Having won the Masters back in January, Mighty Mike has far and away the best Outright Index spread, at 42-45 where the winner gets 60 points and the runner-up 40 etc., and is odds on to make it a 3rd title at 4/7. He faces Jeffrey de Zwaan on Saturday, and sits at a 10-3 Supremacy spread of 23.5-26.5. A fair whack behind van Gerwen is last year’s runner-up Peter Wright, who has an Outright Index spread of 19.5-22.5 alongside a fixed odds price of 15/2. He takes on Jelle Klassen in his opening fixture, and is at a 10-3 Supremacy spread of 15.5-18.5. Then comes Robs Cross, at 18.5-21.5 and 8/1, with the Englishman currently 3rd on the PDC Order of Merit. Cross throws down with Mervyn King on Sunday, and is at a 10-3 Supremacy spread of 13.5-16.5. Likely disappointed to be outside the Outright Index top 3 is Gary Anderson, who sits at a spread of 17.5-20.5. However, the Scottish ace has the 2nd best fixed odds price behind van Gerwen, at 6/1, thanks to his UK Open victory back in early March. Anderson starts his tournament on Sunday against Stephen Bunting, and is at a 10-3 Supremacy spread of 14.5-17.5. Moving away from the 4 frontrunners and the Outright Index spreads take another drop. Mensur Suljovic is at 10.5-13.5, while James Wade – who won back in 2007 – is at 8-10 and Michael Smith is at 7-9. Then there’s Daryl Gurney at 6.5-8.5, Simon Whitlock and Ian White at 5.5-7.5 and Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis at 5-7.
