After what was, all in all, an excellent 2018, can England kick their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign off with a big win over the Czech Republic, at 7.45pm on ITV 1? Gareth Southgate followed up England’s glorious Russian summer, hearts broken but hope restored, with a pretty excellent showing in the Nations League. A 2-1 Wembley loss to Spain in their opening game looked like the country had been brought crashing back down to earth. However, from then on England got better and better.
A draw against Croatia was, obviously, an improvement on their World Cup semi-final loss, while a 3-2 win in Spain might have contained a 2nd half wobble, but was nevertheless a major result. Best of all was their 2-1 victory over Luka Modric and co. in November, an admittedly late win that saw England top Group 4 and secure a place in June’s Nation League play-offs (against the Netherlands). The Czech Republic’s 2018 was a tad less exciting. Having missed out on a spot in the World Cup, they were part of the second tier in the Nations League. Yet a pair of losses to Ukraine left them in the middle of Group 1, missing out on a guaranteed Euro 2020 play-off spot. Predictably Harry Kane heads into Friday’s fixture with a sizeable Super Mega PGM of 63-73, way ahead of Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson, at 33-39, and Man City’s Raheem Sterling, at 31-37. Jadon Sancho – one of those rare England stars that play abroad – may be chasing his first senior international goal, and is at a Super Mega PGM of 24-29. The hosts will fancy themselves in this one, with Spreadex offering an England/Czech Republic Goal Supremacy spread of 1.5-1.7, alongside a Total Goals spread of 2.75-2.95.
