Can the Exeter Chiefs successfully defend their AVIVA Premiership title, or will Saracens, Wasps or, indeed, someone else take the crown? After being losing Grand Finalists in 2015/16, the Chiefs finally secured their first Premiership title in May with an extra-time victory over Wasps (who had actually finished the regular season in 1st place, on the same points as Exeter but with 2 more wins). This time around they’re still expected to be in amongst it – with a Regular Season Index spread of 33-36 and a Grand Final Index spread of 18-21 – but, like the rest of the league, look set to lag behind Saracens. The London club are far and away the favourites for 2016/17 – they sit at a Regular Season Index spread of 42-45 and have a Grand Final Index spread of 28-31. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. Saracens have won back-to-back Champions Cups, and before last season – where they finished in 3rd, before losing their play-off semi to Exeter – had done the same in the Premiership, winning in 2014/15 and 2015/16. The rest of the play-off places will likely be filled by the same teams as last season: beaten finalists Wasps, and the most successful team in the history of the Premiership, Leicester Tigers. The former sit at a Regular Season Index spread of 33-36, the same as Exeter, alongside a Grand Final Index spread of 18-21. The latter, meanwhile, are definitely the outsiders of those who made it to the 2016/17 play-offs at Regular Season and Grand Final Index spreads of 20-23 and 8-11 respectively. And what of the other end of the table? Well, it’s not exactly a shock that London Irish – last season’s Championship champs – are favourite for the chop with a measly Regular Season spread of 1-2.5. The Worcester Warriors, who finished in 11th place but 13 points ahead of the relegated Bristol, are then at 4-6, while Newcastle Falcons are at 6-9.
