The African Cup of Nations, or AFCON, is an international football tournament held every two years to determine the champions of Africa. First played in 1957 and featuring just four teams, Afcon now has 24 sides, with 54 eligible for qualifying and has been won by 15 different countries. The most recent tournament was in Morocco in 2025, where the hosts were controversially awarded the title after their opponents, Senegal, walked off the pitch in the final.

The next edition will be held in 2027 and hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Morocco are the reigning champions after a controversial win in the final, where their opponents, Senegal, won 1-0 but were subsequently stripped of the title after walking from the pitch midway through the game.

Egypt are the most successful side in AFCON history with 15 tournament victories, including three consecutive wins from 2006-10. Cameroon have five titles to their name, Ghana have four, whilst Ivory Coast and Nigeria both have three. Algeria, DR Congo and Senegal are the only other countries to win the tournament on multiple occasions, with two wins apiece, whilst Zambia, Tunisia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Morocco, South Africa and Congo have all won once.

Who are the favourites for the 2027 Rugby World Cup?

Morocco will once again be among the favourites after establishing themselves as one of the world’s best sides over the last few years. Senegal and Ivory Coast have strong teams and will be backed by many to make a deep run, whilst sides like Egypt, Algeria and DR Congo have also had recent success on the international stage.

How many teams qualify for AFCON 2027?

24 – the three host nations are guaranteed a spot, whilst the remaining 21 teams will be determined by qualification matches throughout 2026.

How can I watch AFCON 2027?

Every match was shown live across Channel 4 in 2025, but an official broadcaster is yet to be announced for the 2027 edition.
