Backing Johnston-trained handicap runners on the July Course has long been a route to profit and I’m happy to forgive his last-time-out Doncaster defeat in a race won by his short-priced stablemate. CROW’S NEST (see above) has strong claims in the 3.10, while Godolphin’s SPRING DAWN heads the betting at around the even-money mark in the fillies’ novice stakes after finishing second on her first two outings. WILD SIDE took advantage of the three-year-old weight-for-age allowance when successful at Redcar last time and has strong claims of following up in the 4.55 and BYRON HILL (5.30), at 6-1 his biggest-priced mount of the day, could improve for the first-time blinkers.
