Champions League - League Phase: The State of Play for English Clubs

The Champions League returns on January 20th, and with only two rounds left in the League Phase, the race for the top eight is reaching a critical point. The new format — now in its second season — was designed to create tighter competition, and it has delivered exactly that. Just three points separate 3rd from 15th, meaning every remaining fixture could reshape the knockout picture.

Under the revamped structure, the top 8 qualify directly for the Last 16, while teams finishing 9th–24th must navigate the seeded Round of 32. No club has secured a top‑eight place yet, leaving the Premier League sides with everything still to play for.

English Clubs: Current Standings & Scenarios

🔴 Arsenal — 1st (18 points)

Overview

Arsenal have been flawless so far, boasting a 100% record and conceding just once. Impressive wins over Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich underline their credentials as one of the competition’s standout performers. One more point will mathematically secure a top‑eight finish.

Remaining Fixtures

  • Inter Milan (A) — 20th Jan
  • Kairat Almaty (H) — 28th Jan

Potential Last‑16 Opponents

If they hold their position, Arsenal would bypass the Round of 32 and currently project to face Galatasaray, Juventus, Marseille, or Barcelona in the Last 16.

🔵 Manchester City — 4th (13 points)

Overview

City’s campaign has been steady rather than spectacular. A rotated side suffered a surprise defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, but a crucial win away at Real Madrid has kept them firmly in the top‑eight hunt.

Remaining Fixtures

  • Bodo/Glimt (A) — 20th Jan
  • Galatasaray (H) — 28th Jan

Potential Last‑16 Opponents

City are on course to qualify directly for the Last 16 and would currently face Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea, or Sporting Lisbon.

🔴 Liverpool — 9th (12 points)

Overview

Liverpool sit just outside the top eight, and Arne Slot will be eager to avoid the extra workload of the Round of 32. Their form has been unpredictable: big wins over Atletico, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan, but unexpected losses to Galatasaray and PSV.

Remaining Fixtures

  • Marseille (A) — 21st Jan
  • Qarabag (H) — 28th Jan

Potential Knockout Opponents

As things stand, Liverpool would enter the Knockout Playoffs, facing Napoli or FC Copenhagen. Victory there could set up a Last‑16 clash with Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

⚪ Tottenham — 11th (11 points)

Overview

Tottenham’s European form has been a bright spot in an otherwise difficult season. Despite domestic pressure on Thomas Frank, Spurs have been efficient in Europe, winning the games they should and grinding out valuable away draws.

Remaining Fixtures

  • Borussia Dortmund (H) — 20th Jan
  • Eintracht Frankfurt (A) — 28th Jan

Potential Knockout Opponents

Spurs would currently face PSV or Qarabag in the Knockout Playoffs. Progression would set up a Last‑16 tie with Atalanta or Inter Milan.

⚫Newcastle United — 12th (10 points)

Overview

Newcastle were handed a tough schedule but responded well after an opening defeat to Barcelona, winning three straight. Dropped points in their last two matches have left them with work to do, but St James’ Park will be crucial in their push for the top eight.

Remaining Fixtures

  • PSV (H) — 21st Jan
  • PSG (A) — 28th Jan

Potential Knockout Opponents

Like Spurs, Newcastle would currently meet PSV or Qarabag in the Knockout Playoffs, with Atalanta or Inter Milan awaiting in the Last 16 if they advance.

🔵 Chelsea — 13th (10 points)

Overview

Chelsea’s campaign has been inconsistent, though their 3–0 win over Barcelona was one of the standout results of the entire league phase. Rotations under former manager Enzo Maresca cost them points, leaving them outside the top‑eight picture for now.

Remaining Fixtures

  • Pafos (H) — 21st Jan
  • Napoli (A) — 28th Jan

Potential Knockout Opponents

Chelsea would currently face Monaco or Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 32. A win there could lead to a Last‑16 meeting with PSG or Manchester City.

The Bigger Picture

All six English clubs are on course to reach the knockout stages, but the real battle is avoiding the Round of 32 — a stage that adds two extra fixtures and increases the risk of an early exit. As Liverpool learned last season, finishing higher doesn’t always guarantee a favourable draw, and the new format’s unpredictability is already shaping a dramatic run‑in.
