The Grand National is the centrepiece of the three-day Aintree Festival. Taking place on the second Saturday of April at the famous Merseyside course, it is the most well-known race in Britain and Ireland. No other race generates the same amount of public interest and betting turnover as the Grand National, which has been run since 1839.
Originally ran as the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase, the contest has changed markedly in the name of equine welfare over the years, with field sizes reduced and fences made less challenging. Regardless, the distance of 4m 2½f makes it a test of a horse’s stamina and character, with dual winner Tiger Roll one of the more popular horses in recent Grand National history.
The next Grand National takes place on Saturday 11th April 2026.
The Grand National is held at Aintree Racecourse, an historic track based to the north of Liverpool.
I Am Maxximus, Grangelclare West, Panic Attack, and Jagwar are all likely to be among the favourites for the Grand National this year.
There will be 34 runners in the Grand National, although there is the potential for a couple of non-runner to be withdrawn on the day.
The Grand National will get underway at 4pm.
The race is run over a distance of 4m 2½f.
