Two sides looking for an immediate bounce back to the Premier League meet in a crucial clash on the south coast this evening as Southampton host Ipswich Town. Coventry City have clinched the title, but there are four sides who could still get second place. Ipswich are in the driving seat, having amassed 80 points from their 44 matches and a win tonight would as good as seal promotion.
Level on points with Ipswich, but having played a game more, are Millwall, and a point further back in fourth are Middlesbrough who have also played 45 games. Finally, we come to Southampton, whose form since Tonda Eckert took charge has been remarkable. The Saints are fifth in the league and four points behind Ipswich with a home win tonight potentially setting up a remarkable final day in the Championship.
The pair met back in August with the spoils shared as the pair drew 1-1, the same scoreline as the last match between the two at St Mary’s. In terms of team news, Jack Stephens is a doubt for the hosts tonight as they look to avoid a cup hangover, while Leif Davis is a doubt for the visitors who will be without Conor Townsend, David Button, and Ashley Young.
