The Nations League is an international football competition played by UEFA members. The competition features four leagues, with promotion and relegation between each, while the top teams in the highest league compete in playoffs at the end of the competition to be crowned Nations League champions.

The tournament started in 2018 and is held every two years, with Portugal winning the most recent edition during the 2024/25 season. The next edition will run from September 2026 to June 2027.

Who are the favourites for the Nations League 2026?

Reigning champions Portugal will be looking to retain their title and claim a third Nations League crown from five attempts. Spain, France, England and Germany will also be tipped, and a good World Cup campaign could see any of them made favourites. Netherlands and Belgium also have strong sides, whilst Italy will be hoping to return to the international stage with a bang after missing out on this year’s World Cup.

How many teams play in the Nations League?

The Nations League is split into four leagues. Leagues A/B/C all have 16 teams split into four groups. Group D has six teams split into two groups.

How can I watch Nations League 2028?

England’s Nations League matches will be shown on ITV, and Wales’ matches can be seen on S4C or BBC iPlayer.
