Is this England’s year? A bright, supremely talented squad – the 2nd youngest in the competition – with plenty of high-pressure experience domestically means Gareth Southgate’s side go into Euro 2020 as 2nd favourite at 5/1, behind only France at 9/2.
However, an Outright Index spread of 36-39 – where the winner gets 100 points, runner-up 75, losing semi-finalists 50 etc – paints a slightly different picture, putting them level with Spain, and behind France at 38-41 and Belgium at 39-43.
We’re even joint-favourites, alongside Belgium, at 9/2 to end the tournament as the highest scoring team (excluding extra-time).
And Spreadex’s England prices don’t end there. At the top of our Tournament Minutes Played spreads, you’ve boldly got Harry Kane at 415-445 ahead of 1st choice keeper Jordan Pickford at 400-430.
At the other end, Sam Johnstone is going to be lucky to get a look-in at 0-10, while Buyako Saka is at 20-40, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin a potential super-sub at 30-50.
Going forwards, Kane sits at a Tournament Goals spread of 2.7-3.2, with Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford then on 0.8-1.1 apiece.
Kane also tops Spreadex’s England Tournament Assists table, at 0.9-1.2 against the 0.7-1 shared by Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. England still need to actually escape a group that includes a Scotland-side desperate to get one over their southern siblings, Tomas Soucek’s Czech Republic and, in Croatia, the team that denied us a World Cup final.
Southgate and co. should hopefully get some measure of revenge in their competition opener on Sunday 13th June, where Spreadex is offering an England/Croatia Goal Supremacy spread of 0.75-0.95.
If England do win the group, they can expect one of France, Portugal or Germany in the last-16. Overcome that early obstacle, and it’d most likely be Spain in the quarter-finals, and potentially the Netherlands in the semis. A true gauntlet that’d make the journey all the sweeter if we did win it.
The runners-up spot, on the other hand, would put England likely against Sweden or Poland, realistically followed, sadly, by France, Portugal or Germany in the quarters.
