Can India reverse the curse that appears to plague them in Tests on English soil when the 2nd in the 5 game series gets underway on Thursday? The opener at Edgbaston was a close run thing, with just 31 runs in it. The visitors were chasing 194 in their 2nd innings, and headed into 4th day at 110-5, leaving them with a not unreasonable target. However, James Anderson took out Dinesh Karthik with the 6th ball, before Ben Stokes – who has been in the news for very different reasons this week – crucially took out Virat Kohli on 51 runs, just shy of 100 behind what the Indian captain managed in the 1st innings. A duck for Mohammed Shami then followed, with Ishant Sharma and Hardik Pandya falling soon after. So, England take the lead, and are understandably still favourites to win the series, at a binary spread of 69.2-75 to India’s 14.3-19, with fixed odds of 1/3 and 17/4 respectively. It is perhaps more interesting then to look at what individual players might be up to in the next few weeks. With 200 already in the bag, Kohli has a huge Series Runs spread of 565-585, while Joe Root is at 450-470 with 94 runs so far, and Jonny Bairstow is at 3750395 having tallied 98 in the 1st Test. As for the Bowler Series Index – where it’s 10 points per wicket taken, with a 25 point bonus for a 5-wicket haul in an innings – Ravichandran Ashwin is at 246-256 with 70 points already, while Ishant Sharma is at 224-234 with 85 points. For England, Stuart Broad has a spread of 205-215 after picking up 20 points, with James Anderson at 2450255 with 40 points. As for the 2nd Test itself, England are at a 25:10 Match Result Index spread of 13.1-14.6 to India’s 9.5-11, with the hosts at a binary To Win spread of 45.4-51.3 to the visitors’ 31.2-36.4.
