The African Cup of Nations, or AFCON, is an international football tournament held every two years to determine the champions of Africa. First played in 1957 and featuring just four teams, Afcon now has 24 sides, with 54 eligible for qualifying and has been won by 15 different countries. The most recent tournament was in Morocco in 2025, where the hosts were controversially awarded the title after their opponents, Senegal, walked off the pitch in the final.
The next edition will be held in 2027 and hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
AFCON 2027 will be hosted by three nations - Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
The tournament will run from 19 June to 17 July 2027. Specific match dates are yet to be announced.

The good news for Premier League clubs and fans is that AFCON 2027 won’t disrupt the season. The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, runs from 19 June to 17 July 2027, after the 2026/27 Premier League season ends on 30 May 2027. That means Premier League players will miss no league games for AFCON 2027.

Morocco are the reigning champions after a controversial win in the final, where their opponents, Senegal, won 1-0 but were subsequently stripped of the title after walking from the pitch midway through the game.
Egypt are the most successful side in AFCON history with 7 tournament victories, including three consecutive wins from 2006-10. Cameroon have five titles to their name, Ghana have four, whilst Ivory Coast and Nigeria both have three. Algeria, DR Congo Morocco and Senegal are the only other countries to win the tournament on multiple occasions, with two wins apiece, whilst Zambia, Tunisia, Sudan, Ethiopia, South Africa and Congo have all won once.
Morocco will once again be among the favourites after establishing themselves as one of the world’s best sides over the last few years. Senegal and Ivory Coast have strong teams and will be backed by many to make a deep run, whilst sides like Egypt, Algeria and DR Congo have also had recent success on the international stage.
24 – the three host nations are guaranteed a spot, whilst the remaining 21 teams will be determined by qualification matches throughout 2026.
Every match was shown live across Channel 4 in 2025, but an official broadcaster is yet to be announced for the 2027 edition.
Remember that with spread betting, get the bet wrong and losses can exceed your stake/deposit so it's important you understand how each market works before setting an appropriate stake size for your bet.
