DR Congo, like Haiti, are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1974 when they competed as Zaire and finished bottom of a group containing Scotland, Brazil, and Yugoslavia. With 14 goals conceded and no goals scored in that dismal campaign, things can only get better this time around for the African nation.
They have landed a tough opening opponent in the shape of Portugal, but they will hope to be competitive. Under head coach Sebastien Desabre, they pride themselves on their compactness and discipline, which paid dividends in qualifying. Mentally strong, with late wins over Cameroon and an extra-time win over Jamaica in the play-offs, they have a host of Premier League players to call upon. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe join an eclectic mic of players that includes Angus Gunn, Jamal Musiala, Folarin Balogun, Owen Goodman, as well as fellow team mate Aaron Tshibola, in former England youth internationals representing a different nation. Noah Sadiki and Yoane Wissa will put their club allegiances to one side, whilst veteran Real Betis striker Cedric Bakambu will lead the line.
Portugal, currently 15/2 in our World Cup outright odds, are no longer reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo, and in fact the veteran’s presence could be something of a hindrance. There is a school of thought that PSG’s Goncalo Ramos would be a better fit up top, but Roberto Martinez is unlikely to drop the ageing superstar. The highlight of this Portugal side is undoubtedly the midfield which consists of PSG’s Champions League winning duo Joao Neves and Vitinha, with Bruno Fernandes playing the role of chief creator.

Portugal are the undoubted favourites ahead of this one and can be backed on the 1X2 market at 1/4, with the draw at 23/5 and a shock DR Congo win priced up at 10/1. With the outright win market unappealing to most Portugal backers, eyes will be on alternate markets and you can back a Portugal win to nil at 5/6 with the Portugal/Portugal outcome a 17/20 shot in our HT/FT market.
For the goalscorers, look no further than Ronaldo, who has 146 goals in a Portugal shirt. The 41-year-old is 9/4 to score first and 4/7 to hit the back of the net anytime with Manchester United schemer Fernandes 19/20 to lay on an assist.
